Intense Traffic Became a Life-saving Turn of Events for Bhoomi Chauhan
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport
Heavy traffic unexpectedly became a life-saving event for Bhoomi Chauhan, who narrowly avoided death after missing Air India flight AI-171 to London, which subsequently crashed, resulting in the deaths of 241 individuals. Chauhan, a 29-year-old postgraduate student, was on her way to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Gujarat when an unusually severe traffic jam caused her vehicle to halt for nearly an hour. This delay was crucial, as by the time she reached the terminal, boarding for the ill-fated flight had already concluded.
"I was infuriated and anxious throughout the journey. I kept urging the driver to take different routes, but every path was obstructed. At one point, I even considered leaving my luggage behind and running," Bhoomi recounted, her voice quivering. "Now, I understand that the traffic was God’s way of protecting me."
The Air India aircraft, destined for London, crashed into a densely populated residential area just minutes after take-off. The disaster resulted in 241 fatalities, including passengers, crew members, and residents on the ground. Investigators confirmed that there was only one miraculous survivor—a 7-year-old boy discovered clinging to life beneath the debris.
"I collapsed when I heard the news," Bhoomi stated. "My parents were inconsolable. My name was on the passenger list. I would have occupied that seat." Her voice faltered as she continued, "I didn’t merely miss a flight—I was granted another chance at life."
Authorities have initiated a comprehensive investigation, and a black box recorder has been retrieved from the crash site. In the meantime, Bhoomi expresses that she is still coming to terms with her close call. "Every moment now feels like a gift. I will never complain about traffic again," she remarked with a faint, emotional smile.
