Kudirat Abiola: She stated, "I am not a child. Do not address me in that manner. You speak to me as if you are my parent." - Jamiu Abiola
Kudirat Abiola
Jamiu Abiola, the son of the late Kudirat Abiola, recently recounted a poignant memory of one of his final discussions with his mother prior to her assassination during Nigeria’s military regime. In an interview with Arise Television, Jamiu, who was a teenager residing in New York at the time, reflected on how he learned of his mother’s arrest through an article in the New York Times around 1995/1996.
He expressed his shock upon seeing her photograph in the newspaper and reading that she could potentially face seven years in prison for allegedly instructing individuals to distribute anti-government posters throughout Lagos. Overcome with confusion and concern, he promptly reached out to her.
“She was already back home when I called,” Jamiu recounted. “She inquired how I had found out, and I told her not to worry about that — I simply wanted to confirm if it was true.”
However, Kudirat did not respond in the manner he anticipated. “She kept insisting, ‘I’m not a child, you cannot speak to me in that manner. You should address me as if you are my parent.’”
The dialogue escalated into a dispute, and just a few days later, Kudirat was murdered. She was among the prominent advocates who championed democracy during Nigeria's military dictatorship.
Reflecting on the past, Jamiu stated, “I always express gratitude to God because everyone will eventually pass away. At least she died for a significant cause, and her legacy endures in the memories of many.
