Will Elon Musk ultimately fulfill six years of promises regarding robotaxis?
This week, Musk announced on social media that Tesla’s long-anticipated robotaxi service is set to launch in Austin, Texas on June 22. The CEO of Tesla is placing the company’s future on autonomous vehicles (AV) and a robotaxi service, which he hopes will provide essential revenue as the company faces declining sales and profits.
While Musk advocates for the potential of robotaxis—self-driving vehicles that can transport paying passengers without a driver—there are significant concerns regarding both safety and the business model's sustainability.
Established automakers such as General Motors have already scrapped plans for a similar service after investing billions, citing the substantial resources required and the increasingly competitive landscape of the robotaxi market. Ford has completely abandoned its AV initiatives.
Despite these withdrawals, some experts argue that Tesla's primary competition comes from human drivers working for Uber and Lyft.
“The challenge is less about technology and more about economics,” stated Bryant Walker Smith, an affiliated scholar at the Center for Internet and Society at Stanford Law School, who specializes in autonomous vehicles. “If a company that must pay engineers, mechanics, and remote assistance has to compete with Uber drivers who may earn less than minimum wage while maintaining their own older vehicles, that presents a significant challenge.”
Nevertheless, Musk remains undeterred, making bold claims about how this technology could transform Tesla and the world at large.
“I don’t see anyone being able to compete with Tesla at present,” Musk remarked during the earnings call in April, explaining his confidence in the success of Tesla’s robotaxi service. “But at least to my knowledge, Tesla will have, I don’t know, 99% market share or something absurd.
Robotaxis are set to take to the streets.
Musk warned in his social media update that the June 22 launch date is provisional. Regardless of when it begins, Tesla will need to catch up to far more established competitors.
