Kenneth Okonkwo, a lawyer, political analyst, and a significant figure in Nigeria’s opposition coalition, has reiterated his strong criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, asserting that either Peter Obi or Atiku Abubakar would serve as preferable alternatives.
During an interview on News Night with Arise TV, Okonkwo highlighted that the current coalition of opposition parties is dedicated to establishing a formidable front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in preparation for the 2027 general elections. However, while addressing leadership possibilities, he was quite direct:
"One thing I have consistently stated is that Peter Obi or Atiku would be superior to this regime," Okonkwo remarked candidly. "This regime has glorified every previous administration. Thus, even those who faced criticism in the past now appear as saints in comparison."
Okonkwo’s remarks were made in response to persistent inquiries regarding the opposition coalition’s direction, unity, and urgency—particularly in light of increasing defections, including Senator Neda Imasuen’s recent departure from the Labour Party and a growing sentiment that the coalition is lacking focus and clarity regarding a platform or candidate.
Okonkwo dismissed these worries, asserting that the coalition is still in its formative stages, where discussions are ongoing but formal party selection and candidacy processes have yet to commence. "We are not even at the point of individual ambitions," he clarified. "A coalition is not a political party. It is a gathering of individuals with shared objectives."
In response to the recent defection of the Akwa Ibom governor to the APC, Okonkwo questioned the governor’s political integrity. "A man who claims he desires a smooth journey in 2027 is not what politics requires," he stated. "Politics is not for those who fear storms—it is for those prepared to navigate turbulent waters toward prosperity, security, and national welfare."
