Real Madrid Will sell One of Two Defenders to Make Room For New Arrival
Ferland Mendy
AS, Real Madrid are preparing to finalize the signing of left-back Álvaro Carreras from Benfica. However, the arrival of Carreras means the club will need to part ways with either Fran García or Ferland Mendy to avoid overcrowding in the position.
Currently, Real Madrid have three players vying for the same role, making a departure inevitable. Although negotiations with Benfica have become complicated due to their insistence on receiving the full €50 million release clause for Carreras, sources within Real Madrid remain confident that the deal will eventually be completed.
Once Carreras signs, the club will have to make a decision between keeping either Mendy or García. Mendy, now 30, has a contract that runs until 2027 but has struggled with injuries over recent seasons. While the club is open to selling him, they have yet to receive any formal offers. His injury history and age could limit interest and market value.
In contrast, García, 25, is injury-free and still viewed as a player with significant potential. He has attracted interest from Premier League side Bournemouth, as well as other La Liga clubs. He now has a critical opportunity to showcase his ability in the upcoming Club World Cup, where he is expected to start. This could serve as a platform to impress new manager Xabi Alonso—who previously admired García while managing Bayer Leverkusen—or to boost interest from other teams.
Alonso's tactical preference for attack-minded full-backs could work in García’s favor, especially if he can recapture the promising form of his earlier career. However, once Carreras officially joins the team, Real Madrid will be forced to make a choice: stick with the experience and defensive stability of Mendy, or invest in García’s youth and attacking flair.
