The ruling, delivered on June 10, 2025, was reported by P.M. News and has since sparked widespread reactions across social media and legal circles.
The convict, who faced multiple counts related to fraud, money laundering, and obtaining by false pretenses, was brought before Justice O. A. Williams of the Lagos State High Court.
In a case that had dragged on for several months, the prosecution presented overwhelming evidence of Okonkwo’s involvement in elaborate schemes that defrauded numerous victims.
According to court records, Okonkwo had posed as a financial consultant and investment adviser, using fake documents and digital platforms to lure unsuspecting individuals into fraudulent investment opportunities.
Victims testified about how they were promised extraordinarily high returns on their capital, only for Okonkwo to divert the funds for personal use.
During sentencing, Justice Williams remarked, “The evidence before this court is damning.
"The defendant’s actions not only caused financial ruin to individuals but also posed a threat to the integrity of our financial system.”
The judge noted that the sentence was intended to serve both as punishment and a deterrent to others who might consider engaging in similar acts.
In total, Okonkwo was convicted on 12 counts, each carrying sentences ranging from five to ten years.
The sentences will run concurrently, totaling 74 years.
The court also ordered the forfeiture of several properties, luxury vehicles, and cash recovered from the convict during the investigation.
A statement from the prosecution team read: “This judgment represents a victory for justice and sends a clear message that financial crimes will be met with the full weight of the law.”
Family members of some victims were present in court and expressed relief at the outcome.
One relative, speaking to reporters outside the courtroom, said, “We’ve waited a long time for this. Many lives were destroyed by this man’s greed.”
Public reaction to the sentencing has been swift, with many Nigerians taking to social media to praise the judiciary.
One commentator wrote on X, formerly Twitter, “Finally, a judgment that makes an example of these white-collar criminals. More of this, please.”
The case has been hailed as a landmark ruling in the fight against financial crime in Nigeria, setting a new precedent for the prosecution of similar offenses in the future.
